Dear Seller,
Last November’s elections produced more than 100 new Members of Congress, 26 new Governors, and significant changes in state legislatures across the country. And while the election may be over, the work of the eBay Inc. Government Relations team and our grassroots network, Main Street, has just begun.
As we speak, thousands of new legislators are considering policies that directly affect small business sellers like you. Our real challenge lies in the months ahead–in communicating the interests of America’s small business e-tailers and successfully making the case for sound ecommerce policy.
Here are some of our top priorities in 2011:
Remote Sales Taxes–Today, eBay sellers are required to collect sales taxes only in states where they’re located, not all of the states (and thousands of local jurisdictions) where their customers live. A number of states and big retailers are pushing to impose remote sales taxes on small Internet sellers. Big retailers know increased sales tax burdens will hurt their smaller competitors.
Protecting Consumer Privacy–Federal legislators are looking to establish a comprehensive consumer privacy framework requiring online and offline companies to adhere to specific practices when collecting and using consumer information. eBay is working with policymakers to help strike the right balance and create standards that engender consumer trust, promote the online experience, and preserve the ability of small business retailers to grow and innovate.
Financial Regulation–In response to the economic downturn, the federal government is developing many new regulations that could affect PayPal users and merchants. This spring regulators will make final decisions on debit card processing fees. We will advocate during this process for fairness for merchants who accept debit cards.
All of these threats and more face small entrepreneurial retailers using the Internet to compete and survive in this economic climate. The eBay Government Relations team is working to protect eBay sellers from harmful legislation in both Congress and state capitals. But we need your help–and your voice–to make a major impact.
If you haven’t joined the Main Street program yet, please join 250,000 other eBay users in protecting ecommerce–go to www.ebaymainstreet.com. Together, we can make a big difference.
Sincerely,
Tod Cohen
Vice President, Government Relations
